Nicole De La Loza Rivera
Nicole De La Loza Rivera, Alpha Kappa chapter alumna, stepped out of college and into another country. Nicole decided to spend a year after graduation teaching English in Ecuador, where she previously studied for a semester. She used this time to gain a bigger sense of independence as well as brush up on her Spanish.
Being in Ecuador has given her a new perspective on life in general. About her experience, Nicole says it was “amazing to learn about Latin American literature and social issues from the Ecuadorian perspective.” As a third generation Mexican-America, Nicole felt that at times society didn’t allow Latinos to love themselves. “It was great to be in a place where being Latina is beautiful everywhere you go!” she said.
Returning to the U.S. may not be an easy decision for Nicole. She has considered staying in Ecuador on several occasions. One may see this as being indecisive, but the experience has shown Nicole that it is okay to be unsure. “It’s okay to change my mind...It’s okay that I [may] be lost when I am back in the U.S.,” she says. It’s okay because her time and experience in Ecuador has been so valuable.
Living in another country can be a rewarding experience, allowing her to explore her creativity, yet a lonely one. However, Nicole has felt the support and love of her Hermanas during her time away. She says it is great to be able to get their advice, their packages, cards and just words of encouragement. “I see more now how special our sisterhood is.” |
