SIA WINS NALFO'S PHILANTHROPIC ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARD

New York, NY - May 5, 2008 – Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA) along with other Greek-lettered organizations comprising the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) recently gathered in the State of Texas for NALFO’s Annual Awards Banquet and spring conference. This year SIA was the recipient of the award for National Philanthropic Organization of the year—a highly esteemed and well-earned award!

During 2007, SIA members joined together for national and local initiatives demonstrating their commitment to our goals of serving the community since 1990! Some highlights include:

  •  SIA’s Red Ribbon Campaign: This campaign was a two phase plan taking place throughout a one year period characterized by fundraising events and volunteer projects that benefited the AIDS cause. SIA raised over $16,000 in 2007, thus tripling our original goal.
  •  Children’s International: In 2007, SIA sponsored over 20 Latin American children in countries such as Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Chile and Ecuador!

“As National President, I am extremely proud of this recognition as I know how hard we all worked to make a difference in the community through our philanthropic efforts,” says Ivone De Jesus, “It was an honor to accept this award from NALFO on SIA’s behalf.” As an organization founded on goals that promote community service and leadership, SIA will continue to uphold those goals and continue to raise the bar for years to come.

It definitely helps to have sisters that are truly dedicated to helping and empowering our community. Moreover, we cannot forget the friends and family that helped manifest our commitment to the community and thus make our efforts a success. “Having helped my national board accomplish our community service goals and initiatives has been a true honor. After 11 years in this hermandad I still get my motivation and drive from executing successful community service projects. These ladies continue to amaze me with their willingness to give so much of themselves to their communities, across the US and beyond,” says Community Affairs Director, Joanne Ramirez.
