Inspiring the Path to Excellence
On September 20, 2008, Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. and friends came together in a night of reflection and celebration. On Sept. 29, 1990, SIA was founded by 13 women at 4 schools in NYS. Eighteen years later, we have grown from 13 Lovely Latin Ladies to over 650 women strong.
This night was an intimate night in which sisters were given the chance to reflect on the past 18 years. The banquet's keynote speaker was our very own Cpt. Ariel Batungbacal, H. Pikaki (Chi Chapter Alumna). Ariel related her experiences in the military while making what she learned applicable to our everyday lives. And let us tell you, she is a great story teller. This year, our scholarship was given to two very deserving women: Amanda Pelley and Gabrielle Gonzales

- Graduate Chapter of the Year: Gamma Epsilon, Queens/LI Region
- Alumnae of the Year: Cristina Luna, Alpha Eta Alumna
- Pegasus Award: Heidy Pichardo, Gamma Zeta, NY Upstate/Capitol Region
And welcome our two newest graduate chapters:

-A Founder's Reflection
Thank you all for all of the hard work you do and for getting us to the year 1-8.
It is a short simple word --THANK YOU! A huge and big HUG to you all for all of your efforts. They don't go unnoticed or unappreciated...
This year marks that official transition into adulthood. wow 18 years ... An age where we able to vote and also enter college - that final spring board to our future. But it is what we do with what we have learned and ultimately our life goals
that we prepare for now. Where will SIA be when she turns 21? 30? 40? 50 ? 100? Where will you be? will you have left a legacy? will you have left your mark for the next generation
to follow and hold that bar even higher?
Education empowers. What will you do with your knowledge and empowerment? Will you challenge your self to self growth? to be that better person? to rise above the trivial? Will you live out those goals you have pledged for in your every day lives?
So let us not forget to say Thank you to each other for all these beautiful 18 years and the next 18!
Let's keep taking SIA to the next level! and let that start with each of us individually :)
Be even better tomorrow than you were today. Challenge yourselves to inspire others and all those around you to a path of excellence and receive each day with sharing a warm smile

About Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA):
SIA was founded in New York on September 29, 1990 by thirteen Latina women with the purpose of creating an organization that would help their communities, unite women, promote the Latino culture and uphold a set of distinct goals. Our dedication to scholarship, service and professional development within the Latino community has grown beyond New York, with chapters in several states including: New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.
We are more than a sorority; we are a family and network of professional, strong and dedicated women leaders. We are also a 501(c)7 tax-exempt organization and we work in conjunction with the Solidaridad Inspiracion Amistad Community Foundation, Inc.- a 501(c)3 Community Foundation committed to scholarship, service and professional development within Latino communities nationally. Together, we administer a national scholarship fund for incoming college freshmen who demonstrate academic merit, service to communities in need and exemplary leadership capabilities.
